Growmart

Susan Bresnihan

That what was demanded in way of a plan needed to go beyond tongue and teeth, and hunger and flesh. Beyond bones and the very dust of bones, and the winds that come to blow the dust of bones away.

Describe the problem(s) you intend to solve and/or the preferred state you intend to achieve.

“We believe that ecological principles, when applied to the human condition will offer a resolution to the dichotomy of the "man versus nature" paradigm. In fact, humans are an integral
part of nature, but most of the time we are unaware of our connectedness to the rest of the world. Medical Ecology links natural processes with living on earth, from the point of view of being human. The environment in which we live is characterized by countless physical, chemical, and biological systems, and it is in this complex setting that we carry out our lives, whether we are aware of them or not. The more aware of them we are, the more likely it is that we can avoid those situations that take away from our sense of well-being.” Dickson despommier Mailman school of public health Colombia University.
In 1927 I was convinced that humanity’s problems could never be solved by politics.
Buckminster Fuller Humanity’s Critical path: From Weaponry to Livingry.
Cities cover only 2% of the Earth's surface, but consume 75% of its resources. Cities are black holes; they're swallowing our planet. But, more and more, they're turning green. City farming is spreading fast -- it was estimated in 1993 that city farms were contributing 15% to world food production and it was expected to grow to 33% by 2005. According to the UNDP, some 800 million people worldwide were involved in urban agriculture in 1996, growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs, as well as raising livestock.
Omni-physical success for all is the goal and can be the only beginning of a peaceful resolution for humanity.
This is the beginning of the world livingry service industry. It will use some of the structures of capitalism. This is the best Comprehensive, Anticipatory, Ecologically responsible, Verifiable, Replicable, Achievable, solution we can find.
In order to grow a new culture of livingry we must assertively sow the seeds of that vision.
Imagine a world where every human grew his or her own food. Collected their own water collected their own power needs. What would happen?

Describe your solution and your plan to implement it.

Many fine minds of the world have turned their attention to urban agriculture.
Volunteer groups and city farm collectives form the grass roots end of the spectrum and projects such as the vertical Farm Project (http://verticalfarm.com ) constitute the centrally controlled model that is currently dominant in our resource distribution systems of the late capitalist era.
Growmart is a simple structure that will help accelerate up this process.
Growmarts underlying principal is to give every human the dignity and integrity of the power to nourish yourself , physically , socially and spiritually.
It is not simply food growing it is a system of culture building. There is already the technology the will and the knowledge to achieve food for all in our urban centres.
We begin this solution in the world’s middle class urban centres, Particularly suburbia. Here is the most vacant land that is as such ready to grow since there are millions of gardens all over our suburbs of the 1st world that are tended and watered ornamental gardens.
This section of the population has access to our major communication networks particularly the Internet, are financially stable, literate, aware of global issues. The living habits of this section of western society constitute the most wasteful on the planet.

Urban Farmer is the first building block.
On the simplest level the farmer is an urban dweller that has access to seed and the knowledge of how to successfully grow that seed into food in the farmers local urban environment. Thus capable of being readily undertaken by others.
With this seed and knowledge the farmer has the makings of his own sustainable industry
1. The farmer cultivates the seed to grow food for self nourishment and nourishment of any dependants.
2. The farmer saves the seed and now has enough to grow food for his neighbour who works all day and has no time for or no understanding for growing. For this he is paid for labour. This is a business he can expand and will naturally grow to a point where the farmer may now form a team
3. Any surplus from the food grown may be sold for money or bartered.

TOOLS
Growmart as a business.
Farmer as a grower of food in suburbia.
Gromart will be a set of online tools for facilitating the creation of ‘farmers, that operate as an autonomous sustainable business.
We will be approaching goggle earth to create a layer on interactive garden patches online, using this tool farmers will be able to exchange information with each other, through bulletin boards chat bogs etc. The spread of growmart will be tracked easily as more and more people populate the site with interactive vegetable patches. We will develop Garden design software that is more than just a landscape design tool. The garden design software will also include a comprehensive plant encyclopaedia and care and maintenance advice. Appropriate water systems. This software will have to be localised to suit local regions, extensive information on local conditions, such as plant suitability to local seasons and soil types. We will be using permaculture principles, to build soil and encourage self-seeding. This training will be available online and will, like wikipedia encourage participation and input from local growers. The farmer’s job is to grow food for an average suburban family, in their back yard for less than the price of fruit and veg from the local retail outlet.
A farmer approaches the houses in his local area, they are his customers.
The customer is given a simple chart in which the seasons are marked and the list of available food the farmer is willing or able to grow. The Planting and harvesting cycle will be clearly marked so that the customer can anticipate times of yields.
The farmer may for example choose to be a grower of potatoes, or a grower of tomatoes only. Farmer may also choose to grow only for the immediate family. The scale of operation is Flexable.

Levels of participation
1. Farmer prepares soil, plants, cultivates, harvests, and prepares the food. (Particularly for families who are used to supermarket service)
2. Farmer prepares soil, plants, cultivates, harvests
3. Farmer prepares soil, plants, cultivates, owners harvest and sell surplus to farmer the farmer will to on sell to market.
4. Farmer prepares soil, plants, maintains consultation contact and limited visits, owner takes care of cultivation and harvesting and sell surplus to farmer the farmer will to on sell to market.

Describe how you will finance your solution and make it economically viable.

I will be employing myself as an urban farmer , and if the BFI will help me I will use the money to devolop the infrastructure and the means to promote these methods. This soloution is the ultimate trimtab since it requires no great power of corporation to grow . It is a self replicating sustainable cell and as such an organic economic structure that creates the funds it needs to sustain it as it grows . It simply needs an assertive push.

Describe who will take your solution to the next stage of development (include your qualifications and/or those of your team, and any strategic partners).

With the advice and help from BFI I will find the right people.
