After a decade of research and development on the Roundhouse building system, Doug Marihugh is utilizing a hybrid of Buckminster’s “Tensegrity” patent. The “hybrid” has roots back to Buckminster through Warren Cooley who to Doug’s understanding worked with Mr. Fuller in the same office. Doug Marihugh flew to Portland, Oregon to meet with Mr. Cooley to understand the specifics of the Tensegrity grid.
Unlike Mr. Fuller’s patent, the Roundhouse Tensegrity grid has individual
connection points rather than continuous or cable connection points. Currently concrete dome construction is limited to the size of the air-form that can be inflated. Buckminster originally envisioned the Tensegrity grid to span cities or miles. I would like to keep his dream alive. Ironically the logo of the city of Defiance, Ohio is a city under a dome. Defiance is Doug Marihugh’s hometown and where this design was originally discovered. Upon the discovery Doug pursued this design due to the potential of this style of construction. It began on paper then moved into balsa wood struts, then after returning from Oregon a 48” model was created in an apartment in the Chicago suburbs. Due to financial issues with DeVry and a child on the way Doug was forced to move back to his hometown area of northwest Ohio. Still pursuing the dream, the next step was to search for a rural piece of property to build a prototype in the elements. Due to funding, the prototype took three years to bring it to the level in the picture.
Even now it is still not fully finished with future plans to dig out the interior and build a ring footer with a concrete floor. Located on Doug’s property is a round barn which was an agricultural experiment from 1910 and a concrete dome building experiment from 2003. The picture labeled additional grid is in the second floor of that barn. Doug is pursuing a provisional patent and consulting a patent attorney in Michigan for a utility patent by May 13, 2008.
Future Projects include:
- Full Tensegrity sphere concrete water tower - Self-sustaining dome hydrogen production facility producing surplus energy from water
This structure begins with Warren Cooley’s patent #4,945,693(Concentric dome energy generating building enclosure). Doug Marihugh was given control of this patent during his meeting with Warren in Oregon. Warren gave Doug the building design, and Doug implemented it into his hydrogen production concept. This power generating building would fuel battery chargers that would run the battery banks to fuel the electrolyzers. An electrolyzer converts water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas using DC current. Water is “cooked” into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. Water can be collected in many different ways from parking lots to gutters around the building. Water would be filtered and stored in dome holding tanks then pumped into the hydrogen production dome.
The hydrogen production dome would consist of three sections. First, incoming water reserve storage tanks. Then, the electrolyzer which would “cook” the water in plastic 55 gallon drums. Finally, the distribution valve body for separation of the hydrogen and oxygen to the storage system. Propane tanks have been used for storage of hydrogen. The pure oxygen could be donated or sold for hospital use, and the hydrogen would be stored for use in a fuel cell or burnt in furnaces for industrial use. A local company has already agreed to purchase this system upon completion to curb a $450,000 a year dependence on natural gas.
Once the production facility is produced and mastered the next level of engineering would be to harness the power of lightning. Flash charging of capacitor banks would be possible by using an ion generator at the top of a tower literally baiting a lightning bolt into the tower. Obviously lightning and hydrogen do not go well together, however future research and development would allow for controlled consumption of partial amounts of energy from a bolt which is naturally wasted. Lightning bolts are already being directed just not harnessed. These bolts could flash charge a separate capacitor bank that would then slowly drain-off into the battery bank to run the electrolyzers. Excess energy would be directed to ground.
A building to reference the relationship of hydrogen and dome construction is the A-bomb memorial in Hiroshima, Japan. No, I am not looking to do atomic testing at this time, however the copper dome saved part of that concrete building when the “Little Boy“ bomb was detonated 2000ft. above the structure.
In conclusion, these two concepts utilize the most plentiful natural resources on our planet earth consisting of rock and water.
Q:The problem you are trying to solve and/or the preferred state you are trying to achieve.
Natural disasters are on the rise and are only headed in one direction. Devastation on every level can be avoided through proper planning and the construction of the indestructible Roundhouse building system. Hydrogen burns clean and could be used in industrial applications throughout the world to reduce the burning of fossil fuels.
Q:Your solution and your plan to implement it.
With soaring energy costs and the increase of natural disasters due to global warming Doug Marihugh has developed the company Roundhouse Preservation to preserve energy, life and the posessions of clients through the development of the strongest roofing system available to man.
Q:How you are going to finance it.
National Grants Conferences-www.nationalgrants.com This is a grant review company that will be reviewing my building system and the Alternative Energy Initiative application for the Hydrogen Dome Production Facility.

Bob Armstrong-Mayor of the city of Defiance, Ohio. Potential projects range from fire stations and water towers to maintenance garages.
Projects will be further evaluated upon the completion of a full size structure. I was told that my building system has not been proven at the current level of storm shelters. I would like to build the first dome fire station in my hometown. I have already delivered renderings of firestation X or the indestructible firestation to Bob Armstrong. These renderings were from the Monolithic building system that David B. South runs. If Doug were to win this contest he would purchase a concrete pump which is the last item needed for full production, and the balance would be donated to the production of firestation X with a memorial on the building to Warren, Buckminster, and David South. This would be the first dome firestation in the U.S. Doug’s father and grandfather were fire chiefs in Defiance and the city badly needs a north side station due to the Maumee river bisecting the city. Doug’s father does not believe in his dream, and has become estranged due to the pursuit of this dream. Bob Armstrong said, ”If you can park a fire truck in it he would like it.” A Strongwell (www.strongwell.com) helicopter pad could be made on top of the dome offering a square appearance to a round structure making it more appealing to people who do not think outside the box. Strongwell products are 20% stronger than steel and 80% lighter making their products extremely strong and favorable for Roundhouse product selection. “Roundhouse is building outside the box.”
Bob Cook was the first Roundhouse sale and he was a retired firefighter who described the 1965 F4 tornado that went through Pleasant Lake, Indiana. Doug was told that the fire barn was emptied, and that equipment was sent to the edge of the county in each direction to prevent loss of all the first response equipment. It was this life experience that sold him immediately upon seeing my story on WANE-TV. Doug was told that he could purchase copies of the release through Columbus News Clips @ 888-283-8138. The segment was recorded on May 14th and aired Wednesday the 16th at 5:00pm and then again at 6:00pm showing a different version of the story. www.roundhousepreservation.com was the featured website. Doug is still learning the software so the website is under-construction. Doug also has control of the website www.stormdomes.com . That will be coming soon.
Doug Marihugh helped build the first 6-axis EDM in North America revolutionizing the aerospace turbine industry-GE Turbine Division.
Doug Marihugh built the voicecoil boards for the Navistar's Camless Motor Division which was the the first camless diesel motor produced.
I get no credit.
