MetaTron EarthGame

Paul R. Holman

As a young man in the 70’s and early 80’s, I had the opportunity to interact with, and assist, Buckminster Fuller, on many occasions, and was inspired by his comprehension and understanding of the human experience and the potential of man and technology to create design solutions for human needs and global problems. Later in the 80’s, I had the opportunity to participate in numerous world game events and was inspired further by the facilitation of collective intelligence and action to create
sustainable living systems.

In 1997, in association with Gunter Pauli’s Zero Emissions Research Initiative, I created a unique computerized visual display at the entrance of the General Assembly identifying effective working systems for supporting healthy sustainable environmental action, such as land reclamation, water and air purification, and residual community benefits. A digital representation of sites and existing effective activities in the world could be viewed by global leaders and environmental activists on large screen video displays.

These experiences inspired a desire to create a technological venue to facilitate collaborative learning and identification of the most effective working systems related to the support and maintenance of a sustainable ecosphere (air, land, water and food).

A technological environment, called the MetaTron, utilizes new applications of content processing software and innovative display technologies as the navigation environment for an interactive information gathering experiment called the Earth Game. The Earth Game is a venue based and online team internet-surfing tournament enabling cooperative groups to search, review, compile, categorize and assign value to effective technologies, systems and actions. The MetaTron Earth Game is a new arena to facilitate collective intelligence and identify and bring to the forefront, effective solutions, to environmental and societal human needs.

The Earth Game is a virtual private network, bringing together sophisticated content processing software developed for science and academic research in combination with other unique hardware/software technologies to enable tracking, compilation and access to information by cooperative teams.

The purpose of the Earth Game is to bring to the forefront the innovative and sometimes simple technologies and applications that currently exist and are effectively practiced by different communities and organizations in various parts of the world, that protect the planetary environment, and advance the well-being and sustenance of those within it. It is a mechanism to identify, retrieve and categorize this information and make it available the general public to promote its effective utilization to solve societal dilemmas.

Teams will be created consisting of various corporate, civic and academic or community members. It is a multi day tournament consisting of multiplayer workstations and environmental media displays to enable cooperative searching and monitoring the flow and compilation of content and the tracking of information discoveries and associated video, photographic, text, and internet data.

This environment will be created in a traveling geodesic or inflatable dome structure that can be utilized in a variety of venues such as universities, civic centers and research facilities and can enable information research on any chosen topic in addition to the environment (education, health, emergency community/governmental resource response). The MetaTron environment will also include showcase displays and demonstrations of technology utilized.

Funding will enable the training of first team participants in the use of common software and the acquisition and integration of software and hardware such as computer workstations, servers, interfaces and LCD, LED and projection displays. Such funding will also facilitate matching funds, hardware/software contributions as well as technical support from corporate sponsors. Associations have already been developed with software companies such as The Brain, Stellent, Interwoven, and hardware companies such Alienware Computers and Advanced Micro Devices, and ATI Graphics Drivers.

The MetaTron Earth Game will create economic viability through sponsorship contributions from vendors and manufacturers as well as ticket sales to those who wish to observe the process and view exhibits. In addition there can be a subscription fee for online participants. In addition to this, the MetaTron Environment will also be used to facilitate community synergy conferencing and networking which may also generate supplemental operating support.
