My home is a CASL

David McDermott

The design for an earthquake proof shelter is a comprehensive structural and architectural solution to resolve existing conditions of habitation. The CASL or Columnic Activated Spring Loader would be used in existing or new conditions to support a shelter from harmful earthquakes therefore saving countless lives and material damage. The CASL could be used in custom, modulor or component kit form to retrofit any dwelling. Ultimately a prototype house could be built which would display the CASL system.

Describe the critical need your solution addresses.

*My current stage of initiative is developing a 3D drawing package and contacting real estate developers who would wish to build a progressive residential design such as the CASL system for a prototypical residence. Once this is accomplished then the consultant team can move ahead with the rest of the concept including computer drawings of architectural, mechanical, structural, and electrical consultants to complete a set of documents and design. A short list of construction contractors has already been chosen to build the design.
Prize money will be used to fabricate a prototype CASL. Prize money will also be given to pay the project team for drawings accomplished to implement the CASL concept. This would include any marketing put forth to educate the public on this new idea and obtain buyers for a built CASL residence. This may be international in scope including Japan, Turkey and China where earthquake areas exist.

Explain your initiative in more depth and its stage of development.

*Comprehensive
The key issues surrounding earthquakes are 1)loss of life 2)building material/structural/mechanical/electrical failure and consequent inhabitable space. The CASL system aims to solve these issues with its technology and design. The slip plate on top of the spring absorbs the shock of the earthquake and seismic forces.
Anticipatory
Critical future trends and needs involve the ingenious use of natural and technological ideas forecasting a high performance solution.
Ecologically Responsible
The CASL does not impose any harmful effects on the environment
Feasible
The CASL can be shop fabricated and is made of steel and wood.
Verifiable
A lab test can be made with the CASL system to verify its integrity and usefulness.
Replicable
The body area of the CASL of 3 vertical segments ( vertebrae) can be used separately without the base to satisfy certain conditions... as a trimtab...for example where the foundation meets the first floor at close proximity. The CASL can be used globally in any earthquake prone region.

How does your strategy and approach respond creatively and comprehensively to key issues?

*My team has a combined total of approximately 40 years in the design field and are fully qualified for a project of this magnitude. This experience encompasses interior and exterior design including residential work, coordination of consultants, vendors, material suppliers and client interaction.
External validation has already been accomplished by scheduled meeting with a structural engineer who has effectively given a green light on the concept.
