I attended a lecture by Buckminister at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washingtonin 1976. I have always been moved by his personal story In the 1980's I worked in the Solar industry and ran across the Monolithic Dome building concept.www.monolithicdome.com. I saw the next evolution of Buckey's dream. I have been chasing and fighting for it every since. www.ferndaledoubledome.com is my anticipatory attempt at first in war and first in peace. Our goal is to cost effectivly design and build
a enviromentaly sustainable movement of energy domes.
Our small town of 10,000 pop. is downwind of oil refineries. It's in the Nooksack river flood plain and is down hill from a dormant volcano. We are sometimes hit with freak and brutal storms. We are a coastal town with parts just above sea level With live with the threat of global warming. We need a diaster prepardeness center. And one that can be designed to float if nescessary.
We are preparing a grass roots social experiment. To kill multiple social problems with one design. We are building a Swimming pool and Community center.
Peak oil and the costs of energy has shut down public swimming facilities nationwide at a time when obesity and childhood diabetes increase. This project has a unique focus on energy, with it's co-generation and conservation.
Our solution exemplifies "The trimtab principle" If you choose us we will double and return your 100,000 dollars as a tribute to Bucky. we have other financing. The following year would allow you to triple your award money. Our concept is partialy funded by beer the multiplying of yeast is what we live by. With your national recognition other towns will want to pop these up.
Proper ecology is evident with is bermed roof and solar features. It has a near record low carbon footprint. The life expectancy of the Dome is over a century. It also serves as a teaching tool for children and a showcase for progressive Organic public Architecture. Our connecting polycarbonate Conservatory capped with a dome, between the 2 domes is a seed bank and habitat to many rare plants, buterflies and amphibians. We hope to be fully operational for the 2010 world Olympics held 20 miles north in Vancouver B.C.
The Governor of our State Christene Gregoire and other politicians support are now being sought. We have currently raised over a million dollars in labor and material pledges. The Buckminister awards prestige will help repay these pioneers with the pride of public bragging rights. We are in a current debate on the exact location a 20 acre parcel is already owned by the city and available. The speed of construction and savings on material and labor make this an ideal solution for a public communal space especialy when public cofers are stretched so thin.
This current inflatable concrete building technology is being replicated globaly now and is being most readily adapted in 3rd world countries, see Monolithic Indonesia Tsunami recovery project on their website. We take that idea and customize it by optimizing renewable local energy resouces.
The Swimming pool is the fun part and celebrates the spirit of humanity. Its use as a recreational and public preventable health facility and will help with the health care crisis we are now facing. A large public kitchen and sustainable foodbank is also part of the plan.not shown in any pictures is the refrigerated domes that doubles as a perishable food storage and ice arena.
