Selection Process
REVIEW TEAM // JURY

The winner of The Buckminster Fuller Challenge is chosen in a multi-stage selection process; Several rounds of in-depth dialogue take place amongst the review team over the course of twelve weeks to determine which entries will be advanced. The review team is an experienced group of people drawn from diverse fields of expertise and comprised of members of BFI’s staff & Board, advisors to the Challenge and other technical experts as required. A group of Semi-Finalists will be selected and advanced for review by our distinguished jurors who will then select the winner.
STAGE ONE

General Review: All entries are vetted for compliance with the entry criteria and eligibility requirements.
Detailed Review: Each review team member carefully reads, researches and evaluates each project against the criteria.
In-Depth Review: Senior review team experts will reflect on conversations and notes to advise and narrow down pool to move forward.
Interviews: A selection of outstanding entries will be invited to participate in an interview and to submit more detailed information as needed. Submittals at this stage may include but are not limited to; high resolution images, detailed budgets, progress updates, and letters of reference expanding on the strength and support of the project from one or more references.
STAGE TWO

Initial Deliberation: A group of Semi-Finalists will be selected and advanced for review by our distinguished jurors. If you did not create a video it is highly recommended that you prepare one at this time.
Final Deliberation: Following a review of the Semi-Finalists, jurors will select a group of Finalists. A two-minute project video will be requested, if not already submitted. This is used to showcase your work.
STAGE THREE

Winner Awarded: The Winner, Runner-Up and and Honorable Mentions will be revealed at an award ceremony in New York City. The Jury and BFI will compose statements advocating their selections.
SCHEDULE FOR THE 2013 CYCLE
March 1, 2013: Begin accepting applications online.
5 pm, Eastern Daylight Time, April 12, 2013: Deadline to submit entry to the 2013 Buckminster Fuller Challenge.
July: Scheduled Interviews
August: Semi-Finalists Announced
October: Jury Deliberations
October: Finalists Announced
November 2013: Winner Announced in Conferring Ceremony in New York City
The decision of The Buckminster Fuller Challenge jury is final. The Buckminster Fuller Institute reserves the right to withhold conferring the prize if it concludes, with the full support of the jury, that none of the entries submitted to the jury adequately meet the criteria.
